The original foundation design included rock socketed
H-piles with a small number of bored piles. However, Hip Hing
Engineering’s project team soon realized that since other largescale
infrastructure projects (such as the Central Kowloon Route
and the expansion of the Hong Kong International Airport) currently
underway in Hong Kong also use rock socketed H-piles,
there would be an insufficient supply of socket H-pile machines
and operators for KTSP.
INTERNATIONAL PROJECT SPOTLIGHT
Therefore, Hip Hing Engineering’s project team reassessed the
geological conditions of the site and concluded that the socketed
H-piles in the southern side of the project site could be replaced
by driven H-piles. This allowed the project team to optimize the
deployment of piling machines by maintaining socket H-piles in
certain areas but alternating to driven H-piles in other areas.
In total, the project required 2,740 rock socketed steel H-piles
in lengths between 26 and 96 meters; 4,346 driven steel H-piles in
