KAI TAK SPORTS
PARK PROJECT
This mega-project in Hong Kong aims to be a global
benchmark for sports and entertainment precincts
By Jill Harris, Lester Publications, LLC
The 28-hectare Kai Tak Sports Park (KTSP) will be the
largest world class sports venue in Hong Kong, contributing
significantly to the future sports development
of Hong Kong. The KTSP, located in close proximity to the nearby
rapid transit stations and other transportation hubs, will provide a
high quality and fully integrated sports, leisure and entertainment
destination for major events and activities as well as for the daily
enjoyment by the community.
KTSP will feature three main venues – a 50,000-seat multipurpose
Main Stadium with a retractable roof, an Indoor Sports
Centre with the flexibility to host community sports and events
of up to 10,000 seats and a Public Sports Ground with 5,000 seats
that will be suitable for hosting inter-school athletic events and
domestic leagues. In addition, KTSP will also offer a Main Plaza
for community activities, an Event Village for live entertainment,
a Neighbourhood Park for runners, a Health and Wellness Centre,
a Dining Cove overlooking the Victoria Harbour and 57,000 square
meters of retail space.
Hip Hing Engineering Co. Ltd. (Hip Hing Engineering) is the
design and build contractor for KTSP and Vibro (H.K.) Ltd. is the
specialist contractor for piling works.
Deep foundations
According to Michael Wong, senior project manager of Hip Hing
Engineering Co. Ltd., and Terence Ng, senior project manager of
Vibro (H.K.) Ltd., the substantial variations in the geological conditions
across the huge site posed a significant challenge to the
project team.
Ng elaborates that they found varying depths of soil and rock
stratum with many localized fault zones across the site. He adds
that the depth of the rock level in some areas near localized fault
zones could be hardly detected by carrying out pre-drilling to
depth of over 100 metres, thus posing a significant challenge to the
design, planning and conducting of piling works.
