“I like to be more in the nitty gritty,” she said. “I didn’t like the
demolition work, it’s not as interesting as deep foundations with
the big rigs, out there in the soil.”
While no day is typical for Emanuel, she likes to start them
all the same way. Working from her remote home office in Long
Island, N.Y., she’s up at 5 a.m. each morning for a workout,
before touching base with the foremen on her projects for progress
reports.
“From there, I review the data from the day before and make
sure everything looks good to go,” she said. “I will manage a few
projects at a time and they are all at different stages. Throughout
the day, my tasks are ever-evolving. The day is always changing,
and that keeps it interesting for me.”
Her favorite days are the ones spent in the field, discussing
logistics and strategy, arming the foreman and crew with the tools
and resources needed to get the job done safely and efficiently.
“I work with the crew on a daily basis to make the initial plan
on paper become a reality during construction, and I help troubleshoot
any issues they may encounter along the way.”
She recalled a challenging project that recently wrapped up in
Brooklyn, involving impact piers and driven ductile iron piles. A
sensitive old retaining wall was leaning into the job site, and there
were concerns about vibrations disturbing its integrity.
“We were working right up against the other buildings in
Brooklyn. Normally, for a pile driving contractor, you’re the first
person on the site and remain so for quite a while,” she said. “But
this job had a very tight schedule, and they were pushing the foundation
ahead. We had to work with the contractor as they were
pouring the foundations, tying the rebar, and in that mess, we
