Challenges of coastal projects
There are often unique challenges associated with projects
located in the coastal environment that often need
to be considered in each step of the project. For example:
Regulatory: All work on the coast is highly regulated
due to the environmentally sensitive location. Regulatory
requirements will impact how projects are designed, accessed

and constructed.
Challenging load cases: Hydrodynamic forces can exert
pressures of thousands of pounds per square inch.
Developing design solutions that can be robust enough
to withstand their environment while being economical
enough to construct is always a pressing challenge.
Construction access: While working along the water’s
edge, it is often too close to the water to be considered
upland work, while too close to shore to be considered
offshore work. Tidal action can make it necessary to either
float equipment in and out of position as tide allows
or, alternatively, to bring land-based equipment into the
intertidal areas when the tide is out. These limitations
on access often adversely impact project budget and
schedule.
Material degradation: Galvanic corrosion, debris impact,
ice damage and marine borers all conspire to limit the
functional life span of marine structures. It is important to
consider means to address these challenges to maximize
structure life. Use of timber treatments, steel coatings
and other interventions is common to aid in longevity.
