time to complete his degree at The Citadel while holding down
a full-time job.
“It was pretty challenging at the time. I respect anybody who
does that now because I’ve been there and know exactly how
challenging it can be,” he said.
Williams first joined S&ME as a staff professional before being
promoted to project manager. He later served as a department
manager and then as a business developer before taking on the
role of VP and senior business developer.
As VP and senior business developer, he is responsible for
studying growth market opportunities, pursuing new projects
and building relationships with new clients. Williams says relationship
building is the aspect of his job he enjoys the most.
“I am a people person. I like meeting new people. The thing is
that people work with people they like. If they get to know you
and get to like you, they’ll want to work with you and give you
business,” he said.
One of the biggest influences on Williams in that regard has
been Marty Baltzegar, VP and client development leader for
S&ME’s Energy Business Unit. Williams has worked closely with
him for the past 20 years and regards him as a personal mentor.
“It was funny, when I would first go out to meet clients and tell
them my name, they would say, ‘You must work for Marty.’ Before
I even got to meet him, that was all I was hearing. Eventually I
said I need to get to know this guy and how he relates to clients,”
he said. “The main thing was just the way he interacted with
people and how people interacted with him. He really took care
of his clients, and he really had a passion for what he was doing.”
Williams now finds himself in a similar kind of mentorship
role. He serves on the advisory boards of several community
