The press-in piling record is the ultimate tool for the quality
assurance of pile installation. In terms of the bearing capacity of
press-in piles, the recorded final press-in force is proof that the
installed pile has the bearing capacity of the measured value.
Further, comparing press-in and extraction forces at the same
depth of the pile, one can deduce the recorded pile tip resistance
which can be compared to the value estimated from pre-existing
boring data for their consistency. Also, collecting and analyzing the
press-in data allow a scientific approach to prepare the most effective
set of press-in piling parameters for different soil conditions,
pile types and pile lengths for future projects.
Figure 3 (page 116) shows an example of the straight and level
pile top line of pressed in sheet piles on an earthen levee repair
project in California. Pressed-in piles can normally achieve this
level of accurate installation thanks to the quality control that the
press-in piling method always utilizes. t
