IBC 2018 Successful Revisions by the GeoCoalition

Some of the changes recommended by the
GeoCoalition were simply to improve the
choice of words without changing the overall
meaning of the code. For example:
☐☐“Frictional” resistance was changed to
“shaft” resistance
☐☐“Allowable working load” was changed to
“allowable load”
☐☐“Grouted-in-place” was added after
“cast-in place”
☐☐“Outside diameter” was changed to
“nominal diameter”
☐☐“Driven” was changed to “advanced” to
accommodate other foundation elements
beside driven piles
However, we also made some substantive
changes:
ADVOCACY
The phrase “combined pile raft” was added to Chapter 2 Definitions:
IBC 2018 Chapter 2 Definitions
COMBINED PILE RAFT. A geotechnical composite construction that combines the
bearing effect of both foundation elements, raft and piles, by taking into account
interactions between the foundation elements and the subsoil.

We also added a phrase to 1810.3.11 Pile Caps, allowing the soil below the cap to contribute to
the capacity:
