“There’s not a class you can take
that says ‘hey, I want to drive piles
on the river, how do I do it?’”
– J.J. Knowles, Cecil D. Gassiott, LLC
expertise to help you in any situation, whether you’re trying to
work with an engineer to redesign something or whether you’re
running into difficulties based on certain soil types.
“I’m a big fan of the driven pile,” said Knowles. “It’s like PDCA
says, ‘A driven pile is a tested pile.’ I think driving piles is the way
things should be done. That’s how it’s meant to be and PDCA
stands for that. That’s why we’re supporting them.”
He notes that the monitoring of driven piles results in a finished
product that is “mathematically guaranteed. Once you’re finished,
you know exactly what you have. You know the bearing capacities
of your piles, you know the resistances of your piles, you know the
load limits of the piles. You know everything there is to know about
that pile when you drive it. There are no more assumptions.”
As for the future of CDG, plans are for the company to continue
to grow, Knowles says.
“We’re not a giant contractor. We are a $10-million contractor.
We’re looking to grow that.” t
Much of CDG, LLC’s work is for state, parish or local governments.
The company specializes in driven concrete piles of 30
inches or less for bridges.
“We drive those for all the different bridges around. We also
install a lot of sheet pile driving for all different sub areas, whether
it be headwalls or shoring or cofferdams,” said Knowles. As another
example of its capabilities, the company completed a 160 linear
foot, 10-foot diameter bore several years ago.
CDG, LLC recently completed a few bridge projects for the
Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development in
which it acted as pile driving subcontractor. It’s now driving piles
on a five-span bridge in Covington, La.
Knowles says the company decided to join PDCA about a year
ago given the importance of pile driving on its bottom line.
“The biggest thing I see is the support from the PDCA community
as far as any questions you may have. Anything you may
run into, they’re there to help you. They’re there to provide their
