Chris and his older brother, Phil,
went to the University of Manitoba and
then returned home to farm with their
father. They were adventurous in their
approach, often among the first in the
region to try out unconventional crops
like lentils, faba beans, and triticale.
“It was always interesting to find
something new that potentially paid
you a little more,” Chris says.
The Dzisiak farm had grown to
3,500 acres when Phil was killed in a
boating accident in 1988. Two years
later, a farm accident forced Chris's
father into early retirement.
At that point, Chris decided to
scale back the operation. He didn't
have children to build a business
empire for, and his wife Nadine had
a thriving career as a teacher. He
focused on growing what seemed the
best fit for himself.
In 1998, a new opportunity presented
itself with the legalization of industrial
hemp in Canada. A company called
Consolidated Growers and Processors
was looking to set up a hemp-processing
plant in the Dauphin area, so Chris and
other farmers approached the operators.
