Smith said the service can be used
from the “comfort of a farmer’s tractor,
on the roadside from the truck, or
from the barn.” A person can call as little
or often as they wish, and can also
access other community resources.
“The mental health system is a
really complicated one to navigate and
we can help you do that,” she said.
Smith encourages people to call
before they are in crisis, but she said
the reality for many is that they’re not
going to get the care, attention and
treatment they need before they reach
a place where they don’t know what to
do anymore.
If someone knows of someone else
in distress, Smith said, they can contact
the service and it can reach out to
the affected person, depending on the
circumstances.
Currently, Manitoba Farm, Rural
and Northern Support Services is
available 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to
Friday, but Smith hopes funding will
be increased to allow for 24-hour-aday,
seven-day-a week access. FV
