Still fighting property taxes
Farmers are carrying far more than their share of
municipal taxes because taxes on other classes of
land have decreased, while those on farmland have
drastically increased. KAP is pushing the province
for a change in the portion of the assessment used
to calculate taxes on farmland, something that
would reduce farmland taxes. KAP made this an
issue during the municipal election campaign, urging
farmers to raise the issue with their candidates.
This was done through an editorial by president
Bill Campbell in the Manitoba Co-operator, as well
as in a mailout to all members and notices in the
KAP Alert.
Pushing for education tax revisions
KAP has long lobbied for a new way to calculate education
taxes, and in 2018, the province announced
an education review that will include funding. MLA
Ian Wishart, former education minister who has
been tasked with co-ordinating a thorough review
of the kindergarten to Grade 12 education system,
attended a KAP taxation meeting last summer. He
urged farmers to take part in the online or townhall
consultations that will be coming up, and we will
be notifying our members through the KAP Alert
e-newsletter when this process take place. KAP will
be making a lengthy submission at this time. (Note:
