Chris
Dzisiak
Pioneer of Canada’s hemp industry
BY TJACQUIE NICHOLSON here's a famous quote that states, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing
the same way, but expecting different results.”
That motto has served Chris Dzisiak his entire career. Well-known as a pioneer
of Canada's industrial hemp industry, the Dauphin-area farmer has always tried to
do things a little differently. This out-of-the-box thinking is what led to his decision
to take a chance on an unproven crop, to spearhead a co-op for hemp growers, and to
work for two decades helping the fledgling hemp industry to flourish.
Chris's parents farmed the land north of Dauphin that he lives on today, and their five sons all
took an interest in agriculture. Chris's three younger brothers each explored different corners of the
industry: Rick worked for the Canadian Wheat Board, Rob worked in commodity trade, and Dave
helped to develop a high-health canola for the former Dow Agrosciences (now Corteva Agriscience).
