According to the National Survey
of Farmer Mental Health released in
2016, 58 per cent of producers met
the criteria for anxiety classification,
45 per cent of producers were classified
as having high stress, and 35 per
cent of producers met the criteria for
depression classification.
In addition, 40 per cent of producers
across Canada reported that
they would feel uneasy about seeking
professional help out of concern
of what others may think. Another 31
per cent said seeking professional help
could stigmatize a person’s life, and
fewer than half believe adequate mental
health support even exists.
Klink said even though this issue
has already been on FCC’s radar for
some time, it was the agricultural
community’s response to the Do More
Ag Foundation that inspired the ag
lender’s recent call to action.
“We were kind of overwhelmed
with the responses they got,” said
Klink. “For me, that reinforced the
need and desire for support for mental
health in rural communities.”
