Why do my employees require such expensive drugs?
This question often emerges since rising drug
costs are a predominant concern for employers. And
if they are not currently at the top of your healthcare agenda,
they may be very soon. Why is that? The reason is mainly due to
the many dilemmas the Canadian healthcare system is presently
facing. Oddly enough, these challenges as well as their potential
impact are not getting the attention they deserve.
Here are three factors that are transforming the Canadian
healthcare system:

1. The aging population
In Canada, seniors are a rapidly growing segment of the population
and live longer than previous generations. Did you know that
the population of age 65 and over in Canada is now greater than
the number of children under 15? According to the Government
of Canada – Action for Seniors report, in 2012, almost one in
seven Canadians was a senior and by 2030 that number will rise to
almost one in four. In 2014, more than 6 million Canadians were 65
years of age and older, representing 15.6 per cent of the Canadian
population. By 2030, seniors will number over 9.5 million and make
up 23 per cent of Canadians. As for the private club business, the
current census of covered employees indicates an average age of
49.1, which has been increasing over the last five years.
2. The shortage of skilled workers in the labour
market and the recent trend of workers continuing
to work until retirement age
For an employer, the ability to attract and retain a skilled and
competent workforce is critical to the overall success of their business.
Currently there is a lack of workers with the necessary skills
to replace those who will soon retire, and it is anticipated that
skilled labour shortages may occur in some occupations and sectors
of the economy. Staffing capabilities for the private clubs is
not immune to this challenge. The significant wealth of knowledge,
experience and skills of older employees is in demand and may be
