Some clients want their meat less smoky and Rempelco
caters to that. Another client can’t have salt in his diet and
buys 80 pounds of no-salt farmer sausage per order. Rempelco
also sells special custom orders to restaurants like Diana’s
Cocina and Lounge in Winnipeg, which is very specific about
how the farmer sausage is prepared for its pizzas.
“It disciplines us to be in touch with consumers and having
direct conversations with them,” Marg said.
Farm policy, community, and faith
Most people who have met Marg know she is a lucid thinker
and deeply committed to farm policy development. One of
the people she credits for encouraging her is Owen McAuley,
the long-time farm advocate from the hamlet of McAuley in
western Manitoba.
“He was a wonderful mentor and still is a wonderful
mentor,” she said. “I would become frustrated and he would
say, ‘Marg, a rising tide raises all boats.’
“So, it didn’t matter if your craft was a tiny fishing boat, a
great big yacht, or an ocean liner. Anytime you manage to get
a good piece of farm policy, it benefits everyone.”
She has sat on numerous committees and boards over her
lifetime including 4-H district and regional councils, Keystone
Agricultural Producers, Manitoba Rural Adaptation Council,
the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, and the board of directors for
the Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute. She recently sat on
the committee for a three-year review of the U of M’s diploma
agriculture course.
She’s trying to scale back a bit and is ending decades on
the board of the Bethesda Hospital Foundation in Steinbach.
But she’s still on the Manitoba Pork Council board of
directors, for which she was honoured with an award of
