a second time at the elevator even once
their membership is already paid,” she
explained. “We try to reduce that
happening, but when it does, I assure
members that they will get a cheque
from us for the amount that was collected
in error.”
The most interesting and no doubt
most important part of the job is member
engagement. Simply put, that’s talking
to as many members as possible about
their priorities and what they would like
to see KAP working on.
Sandra says members are welcome
to call her any time to talk about ideas
they have for KAP. She also plans to
begin reaching out to members by phone
to initiate these conversations once the
growing season wraps up.
“I’ll be asking people, ‘What are
the things that are important to you, to
your farm, to your family? How can we
be working better on your behalf?’” she
explained. “We need members’ feedback,
because if you don’t tell us what you
need, we won’t know how to go forward.”
She hopes to give special focus to
younger farmers.
“They have totally different needs
and experiences, and we want to be sure
we are serving them and working with
them. I’m looking forward to talking to
them and seeing what they think.”
Outside of work, Sandra says she
enjoys cooking for her family and
travelling, including visits home to
Croatia every few years. Las Vegas is
another favourite destination.
Her husband, Sladjan, has had some
of the same success she’s had climbing
upward in his career. In 2004, he completed
a diploma in air conditioning and
refrigeration and has been working in
that industry ever since, moving up in
the ranks at the same company from
mechanic to project manager to senior
customer service manager.
Their son Damir, now 28, is a
journeyman who also works in the air
conditioning and refrigeration field, and
their daughter, Aida, 22, recently graduated
from the business administration program
at Red River College.
Overall, their life in Canada has
been just what they hoped for when
they decided to make it their home.
“That’s why we came here, to have
these kinds of opportunities.” FV
