While planning the trip, Penner said a number of
agricultural companies contacted him to invite the young
farmers to different events and activities.
“Canterra took us on a field tour and then they provided us
supper – which was pretty amazing,” said Penner. “Ag Growth
International offered us Blue Rodeo tickets, so we ended up
at their concert in the evening, and that was a lot of fun too.”
Penner and his peers were able to participate in some field
demonstrations that he described as “pretty cool.”
“They had a few crop sprayers that you could hop in and
drive out into the field, to see how they function,” he said.
However, Penner saw an impressive piece of new
technology that allows farmers to stay off the field entirely:
the DOT autonomous unit.
“It looks like a tractor with an attachable U-shape,”
Penner explained. “The U-shape will pick up whatever part
of the machine it’s using, so it’s not pulling – it becomes part
of the machine. You don’t do anything as a farmer besides fill
it up.”
The company provided working demonstrations,
showcasing how the unit could be sent out into the field to
seed on its own, then release the 30-foot seeding component
to then attach itself to a 120-foot sprayer – without a farmer
having to step foot on the field.
“It was incredible. Very cool stuff,” said Penner. “That
made me think a lot about where farming is going to go by
the time I’m done farming. Right now, I’m not ready for an
autonomous tractor out on my farm, but I think that could
be a reality partway through my career.”
