agement system eroded by the establishment
of the United States-Mexico-
Canada trade agreement last fall. The
deal was a disappointment for Canada,
granting the U.S. greater market access
to Canadian dairy, capping Canadian
dairy exports, and eliminating the Class
7 category that previously slowed the
flow of modified milk ingredients from
the U.S. into Canada.
In response, Marianne has focused
her efforts on consumer education in her
community, drumming up support for
the local industry. She approached the
manager of her local grocery store to ask
if he would put up some signage to assist
customers who want to ensure they are
buying Canadian dairy.
“He said ‘sure’, and he hung the sign
right there in front of me,” she says. “The
next week I went to the Treherne Co-op
and they also agreed to put up a sign. I
think it shows that we really do have a lot
of support in the community.”
Marianne also represented DFM at
her first KAP annual general meeting
this year, and was impressed by the collaboration
between producers from all
across the industry.
