GZAEngineering excellence
for more than 30 years
GZA is a multidisciplinary firm based in Norwood,
Mass., with 31 offices in New England, the Mid-
Atlantic and the Great Lakes. Founded in 1964 by Don
Goldberg and William Zoino, the company started as a geotechnical
and soils consulting practice, but soon enough broadened its
market to provide a full suite of services to contractors, including
instrumentation, monitoring and foundation testing. In the early
1980s, dynamic pile testing was relatively new but demand ramped
up considerably during the construction of the Central Artery in
Boston. The engineering community recognized the cost and time

savings by accepting dynamic test methods over conventional
static test methods to confirm acceptable pile installation.
Michael Deery joined GZA in 1986 to provide dynamic pile
testing services for the Contractor Support Division and has been
working on PDA projects ever since.
“You remember projects for different reasons, some for the
people that you work with, some for the challenges encountered
and some for the scale of the project,” said Deery. “I have worked on
a multitude of bridge and pier substructures over my tenure with
GZA, but there are a couple of standout projects.”
