He now teaches Fall and Spring semesters with the summers
off, enjoying precious time with his soon-to-be 13 grandchildren,
four of whom live right behind him and Joyce.
The PDPI made its mark, not only on Caliendo but on the geotechnical
profession as well.
“My deep foundations courses include material we taught in
the PDPI; that and more,” he said. “I know those workshops made
a difference, because I see it in a lot of the publications that are now
in the public domain. For example, the National Highway Institute
supports the technology we provided in the PDPI classroom.”
Built by design
As Caliendo spoke with PileDriver, a steady stream of students came
into his office to hand in a take-home exam.
“We have very good students here and I enjoy my daily interaction
with them,” he said. “And my best friends are the people I work
with. That’s what makes this job wonderful.
“Occasionally, I think of retiring; I am 73, but I can’t imagine not
doing this. I enjoy coming to work every day.”
Over the years, Caliendo has been honored with several
awards, including PDCA’s 2014 Presidential Award for
Distinguished Service.
He is a big proponent of the association and has been a member
for many years.
“The PDCA promotes economical, successful foundations,” he
said. “It’s open to engineers and contractors, and that’s the biggest
thing. They are promoting the latest and greatest technology that we
present in the classroom, which our students take with them into the
‘real world’ after graduating.”
Although his list of accolades is long, Caliendo is humble.
“I am very blessed to have a loving and supportive wife
and family.”
Life in his home town of Providence, Utah, is very good indeed.
“I go home, watch the news, fall asleep,” he said. “But then the
grandchildren come over; I told them that our house is their house
and they are always welcome.”
For Caliendo, it’s a good life that was built by design. t
