“This project resulted in the longest labyrinth spillway in
Ohio,” said Kennedy. It was also the first of this kind of spillway for
Mahan. With only 18 months to complete the project, the company
had a tight schedule to meet.

For this project, which the company expects to complete in 2018,
Mahan is the prime contractor. The job includes three packages:
top side, mechanical and electrical and site work.
The site-work package consists of demolition, site clearing and
grading, installation of float guides, a bridge tower, a concrete landing,
pipe supports, handrail, a new float and two access walkways.
Included in the top-side package is installation of an access bridge
tower and stairs, an operator shelter and foundation, crossover
stairs, pipe supports, handrail and ladder and recessed deck framing
and grating. The scope of the project also includes oversight and
support of the mechanical and electrical subcontractor package.
Safety initiatives
“Mahan performs a lot of work for the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers,” said Kennedy. “On jobs for USACE, we follow the EM
385-1-1 Safety Manual. Much of our safety program is based on
this manual.”
Safety meetings and inspections are performed by field staff
on tablets to enable a paperless routine. “This information is used
to provide leading indicators to drive analysis for sound and wise
safety decisions and direction,” said Kennedy. Toolbox Talks are
held daily and activity hazard analysis is performed prior to all new
construction activities.

Illustrating the effectiveness of the company’s safety program,
Kennedy said: “The company recently passed a million man-hours
since its last lost-time injury.”
