Production pile installation took place during June 2017. A
total of 337 production piles were procured from Cox Industries,
located in Eutawville, S.C.
All of the production piles were driven full-length to the specified
top elevation using the Junttan PM-16. Most piles had to be
driven about three-feet below existing grade to reach the designated
pile top elevation. However, for certain areas of the building, such
as elevator pits, piles were driven as much as 10 feet below grade. A
steel follower was used to drive the piles below grade.
Unusually rainy weather made site conditions difficult, often
slowing or halting production, but Pile Drivers’ crew still managed
to average 30 piles per day.
Approximately 100 piles had uplift requirements in addition
to bearing requirements. Uplift connectors were designed so that
they could be attached to the piles before they were driven below
grade. This allowed the uplift devices to be installed more efficiently
and quickly above grade, and pile installation to continue
without unnecessary delay.
With the successful completion of pile installation, building
construction began. Pile caps, grade beams and elevator pits were
excavated and the work of bringing the building out of the ground
got underway.
The new Home2 Suites is scheduled for completion in late
2018. Upon completion, the new hotel will feature 150 rooms,
a swimming pool and other amenities to make life on the road
more comfortable. t

The Cooper Marl is typically
an excellent bearing stratum
for driven piles and provides
a great deal of capacity
through long-term setup.
