numerous structures that include the new terminal building,
concourse, parking garage, central utility plant building and an
elevated highway.
Joshi says that between November 2016 to November 2017,
approximately 5,000 16-inch linear pipe piles were driven as
well as about 350 14x102 H-piles, ranging from 45 to 120 linear
feet in length. All of the piles were supplied by Skyline Steel and
were shipped to Salt Lake City from manufacturing facilities in
the U.S.
Joshi says things went smoothly when Ralph L. Wadsworth
Construction performed static and dynamic testing of the production
piles about two years ago. Once construction started,
the company used four Manitowoc rigs – a 120-ton crane, a
150-ton crane, a 200-ton crane and a 225-ton crane – to perform
the deep foundation work. The piles were installed with
I-30, I-36, I-46 and I-62 ICE® hammers; both swinging and
fixed leads were used.
Tight timelines
At the peak of the foundation work, Joshi says, a team of about
two dozen workers were driving 60 to 80 piles – each weighing 83
pounds per foot – a day at the site.
The project’s tight timelines meant crews had to work at
a speedy pace to install all the piles over the 130-acre project
area. Some weekend work was required to stay ahead of schedule,
Joshi says, but in the end, all the deep foundation work was
completed on time.
BENEFITS OF PDCA MEMBERSHIP
Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction Company has been
a member of the Pile Driving Contractors Association
for the past five years. Joshi says he goes to PDCA
conferences when he can and he always finds them very
beneficial from both a networking and education point
of view.
“I get to interact with industry professionals and hear
about new technologies they’re using,” said Joshi, adding
that it’s always enjoyable to see new equipment and
techniques on display at the trade show.
While attending the PDCA conference in New Orleans in
2016, for example, Joshi was intrigued by the prospects
of new sheet pile vibratory hammers.
“I’m looking forward to see if I can buy some of those,”
he said.
