In order to better serve air travelers, Salt Lake City
International Airport is being redeveloped through a massive
$3.6-billion construction program that started in 2014. The end
result will be a brand-new airport designed to meet the city’s
transportation needs for decades and be adaptable to the constantly
changing aviation industry.
At the center of the plan is a new contemporary terminal
and two new concourses being built just southwest and north
of the existing terminal complex to help minimize the impact
to passengers.
Once completed, the three-story terminal and concourses
will feature dual level access, new parking and more spacious,
modernized facilities that will conform to today’s more stringent
earthquake standards and added security needs, while also
being more energy efficient.
This first phase is scheduled for completion in the fall of
2020, and the entire redevelopment project is slated to end by
2023 or 2024, after the airport’s existing terminals and parking
garage are demolished.
Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction Company of Salt Lake
City was awarded a contract to do the deep foundation work by
HDJV Construction, a joint venture between aviation industry
leader Holder Construction of Atlanta and Utah’s Big-D
Construction. San Francisco-based HOK designed the new
terminal and concourses.
