MEMBER PROFILE – ENGINEERING AFFILIATE
mounted to a hand truck for easy deployment
and dubbed the “SeismoBot.”
For its efforts, the company was
awarded the Innovation Award in 2008,
by seismograph manufacturer, Instantel,
Inc.®, for the innovative development of an
automated vibration and noise monitoring
system that has – over the years – become
the industry standard. The seismograph
fleet has grown 10 to 20 percent per year.
SSI currently owns and operates more
than 200 of these vibration and noise
monitoring systems nationwide.
Within the past two years, SSI has
added seismographs manufactured by
Sigicom® to their fleet. The INFRA™ C-12
and INFRA™ Micro with V-12 vibration
monitors are very reliable, easy to use and
built with integrated modems and replaceable
extended-life lithium batteries. The
equipment is well shielded, water tight
and the data is web-hosted. All these capabilities
are neatly packaged in an off-theshelf
product, thereby keeping the need to
manufacture and maintain the automated
vibration monitoring systems in SSI’s shop
to a minimum.
Pile driving efforts
SSI currently performs approximately 200
vibration and/or noise monitoring projects
a year.
“Out of our headquarters in Maryland,
we are centrally located to several urban
areas where pile driving is performed for
deep foundations, cofferdams and shoring
operations. In Baltimore, Md. and
Washington, D.C., pile driving operations
are performed in very close proximity
to existing structures for infrastructure,
bridge building, deep foundations for highrise
structures and shoring of deep downtown
excavations.”
In New Jersey, SSI has monitored
pile driving operations for seawalls, outfall
sewers, bridge foundations and deep
foundations for buildings up and down the
New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State
Parkway. The company has also monitored
pile driving vibrations and other
construction activities at the Garden State
Parkway’s Egg Harbor Bridge from Somers
Point to Ocean City, N.J., for Wagman
and RE Pierson since 2013.
“Delaware and New York are easily
accessible from our New Jersey location,”
said David. “The Philadelphia market
is also within an hour of this office.
This feeds the competition between the
Redskins fans in the headquarters, and
the Eagles fans in our New Jersey office!”
SSI also monitors vibration and noise
from pile driving and drilled shaft construction
throughout Florida. These two offices
are strategically located to serve its pile driving
customers throughout the state.
A PDCA member since 2008,
Miller says David W. Kozera, P.E. –
whom he affectionately calls the “Pile
Guru of Baltimore” – introduced him to
the local chapter.
“Dave has been a great mentor and
an advocate of our company,” said David.
“Belonging to PDCA is a great opportunity
to network with existing and potential
customers, to keep abreast of new and
existing technology and to participate
in continuing education opportunities.
There is also an opportunity to make a
difference in the industry by publishing
and participating in development of standards
for the industry.” t
